Elinor Abbott was only 14 years old when she and her father left England for America. Six years later, with war at their doorstep, Elinor Abbott is forced to return to her land of birth and a life amongst the aristocracy she abhors. A return to England also means facing the man who brutally attacked her as an adolescent.
Viscount Easton came to the United States at the behest of His Majesty’s Army, for his last assignment. He was sent home early due to an injury and must face his new destiny as the heir to an earldom. An unexpected encounter with the unrefined beauty links Easton and Elinor together in society, and he must decide whether to save Elinor’s reputation or hold on to bachelorhood.
Can Elinor navigate the perils of coming out in aristocratic England and still retain her sense of identity? Can Easton help her overcome her aversion to men? Or will her past keep her from facing her future?

Surrender the Past Traditional Regency Romance LoringAbbott Series Book 1 edition by Elizabeth Johns Literature Fiction eBooks

Very impressed with Elizabeth Johns first novel! She has written a story about a situation that is difficult to even talk about, let alone deal with. The major themes are forgiveness, finding self-worth, and surrendering a painful situation, all the while weaving a great story of finding true love as well. There is a lot of depth to her writing. The main female and male characters have great attraction and chemistry with each other - right from the very start. This book kept me engaged the whole time, reading late into the night! Each chapter flowed well into the next. This is a clean romance novel, with just the right amount of kisses and attraction, but there is a bit of intense writing on a difficult sexual situation that the writer does a good job of describing without being too graphic. I do highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys regency era romance. It has all the great elements, including a satisfying ending. *I also enjoy the author's use of little tidbits from 'Pride and Prejudice'! This is always a great addition! I am already reading the second in the series!

Surrender the Past Traditional Regency Romance LoringAbbott Series Book 1 edition by Elizabeth Johns Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This novel started out a little slow for me, but picked up once the heroine arrived in London. I'm not sure Nathaniel got his just desserts and I would like to know what made him so remorseful. Perhaps that missing information will be revealed in another book of this series.

It never ceases to amaze me how cruel women can be to each other. In a male-dominated society, one would think the ladies would stick together.

As far as the hero and heroine, much was said to reveal the depths of the heroine, but not as much was said about the hero. What was his relationship like with his late brother? What kind of childhood did his parents provide him? What were his ambitions before he became his father's heir?

I would have liked to see Beatrice get her just desserts and grovel a bit more, but I'll read her story next and see what becomes of the heroine's nasty, bitter cousin.

Forgiveness? I support forgiveness, but I can't imagine how a rape victim will live a normal life with her husband's estate bordering the estate her rapist will one day be master over.
Ellinor left London for America six years ago after her mother's death and, with her father, headed for America. It was supposed to be a brief stay. But she loved the Plantation and the life they had there. And even though her family - her sister and brother and Grandmother were still in England - memories of the attack still caused her nightmares. She couldn't share her fears; had not shared her nightmares, and had not told anyone about the attack. But she knew that she could never marry. No man would ever want her for a wife. She would have to be content to be a teacher or something like that. She could not stand for a man to touch her. And now, her father wanted her to find a proper husband, and have a proper English Season. How could she tell him that she was not interested in all of that. Would her family ever understand that she could never marry, without telling them why? Since she had been silent all of this time, would they ever believe her if she did tell them why?

With this dilemma and the most awful proposal (which of course she turned down) still on her mind, she isn't paying attention and is riding her horse- caution to the wind. She is on her way back to the Plantation house before the evening meal. Timing is perfect because she and her horse almost run over Major Adam Trowbridge (Viscount Eaton) and his horse. Trowbridge is on his last assignment with His Majesty's Army. He is visiting Elinor's father with a message from his military superiors before heading back to London. Apparently the plantation is listed as 'not safe from attack' (there is a war between England and America) and Adam needs to deliver this missive to Sir Charles, Elinor's father. Adam plans to be heading home shortly afterwards. His older brother has just died, making Adam the heir; as such, Adam can no longer serve in active duty. Adam has been friends with Elinor's brother Andrew, and remembers a young Elinor. He was not prepared for the sultry beauty that almost runs him over, galloping astride with hair wildly flowing behind her. His abrupt entrance in her path spooks her horse and makes him rear up causing Elinor to land abruptly on her rear. That introduction wasn't the smoothest.

At dinner, when Adam shows, Elinor is embarrassed, recognizing him for the officer she was abrupt and rude to earlier. Despite the somewhat edgy conversation throughout dinner, they are both intrigued. When the plantation is attacked, Adam is gravely injured and Elinor is forced to go to America without her father, and at her father's behest, caring for Adam secretly in an adjoining cabin in order to save his life. Someone wants him dead and her father is trying to find out who and why. Elinor and Adam find themselves enjoying each others' company, and try to make sure that no one sees them together on the ship, so that Elinor's reputation remains in tack, which is so important.

Once Elinor gets to England, things seem to be going her way. She has the love of her family, and is fitting right into London society. Even the relationship between her and Adam seem to hold some promise. But just when things seem to go well for her, she runs headlong into the source of her nightmares...Nathaniel, her cousin, the son of her uncle, the Duke. The attack becomes fresh again in her mind for her, and she faints. Everyone will know about it now, but how will they react and who will they believe?

It is here that the roads part for Elinor - good or bad. Nathaniel has told no one of what he did; and Elinor has told no one. Who can be believed? The son of a Duke, or a fourteen year old girl who never told anyone about something that supposedly happened six years ago? And what will become of Elinor? What will become of Adam's relationship with Elinor? There's nothing I can tell you or will tell you to spoil this wonderful story...except buy it and read it. There is SO MUCH here. And Elizabeth Johns is the best storyteller. I promise!
Sir Charles left England six years ago, after the death of his beloved wife. He now realizes that he was running away from the loss as was his daughter, Elinor, but what he doesn’t know is that Elly was also running from another loss, a terrifying experience that continues to give her those dreaded nightmares. Sir Charles made a promise to return Elinor to her maternal grandmother’s care and presentation for her London Season. Elinor has become an independent American now and doesn’t see the need since she never plans to wed, besides, she hates the political game plays from all those spoiled debutants and their mothers, who are showing the ladies off like cattle at auction. She will go to England, but doesn’t plan to be a match for any of those wealthy gents that aren’t men of character. She knows many of them all too well. This story is very well written and it deals with some social issues that have plagued generations and how the characters deal with some of the issues. Need to note that this story tells of the nightmares of a young girl’s rape, not really understanding what happened or how to express it and the hurt in that it was someone she trusted. This subject is tastefully handled and isn’t the main setting of the story, the compassion of Elinor towards the workers on their plantation in America and Adam in the caring for all how dwell in his village and the orphans. That being said, the story has some twists that add interest to what promises to be a great series, from the English verses American wars and treaties to the family responsibilities along with the individuals in leadership roles to sweetly innocent romance. The characters are varied in both personality and morality, some are loveable and some behave badly, but all together definitely create a page turning experience.
